The original web manga series began publication in early 2009 by an author who uses the pseudonym One. After becoming a viral sensation in June of 2012, a digital remake of the series was released by Shueisha’s Young Jump Web Comics which was illustrated by Yusuke Murata. An anime adaptation series soon followed in 2015 that was produced by Madhouse. The anime was released in Japan between October and December of that year. The dubbed version was later released in the US during the summer of 2016.

Yuri On Ice, the break out sports anime of 2016, has proudly topped domestic Blu-Ray sales in Japan. Meaning, that the anime has sold over 33,000 Blue-Ray units during its initial week on the market. Likewise, the DVD version of the hit anime has sold 13,000 units granting YOI the second place spot on the DVD trades spot list. This is NERDTASTIC! For the people who are waiting to hear whether or not there will be a season 2, this dang near confirms that there will be one.

In my opinion, the continuation of an anime is usually determined by 2 factors. One of them being whether or not there is enough material from the manga it is based on if applicable. The second being how well the first seasons sells domestically as well as internationally. So, according to these numbers a Yuri On Ice continuation is almost guaranteed. In fact, the co-creator of YOI has been keeping fans on edge by sprinkling the fandom with hints as to if and when she plans on completing the second season.

Mitsuro Kubo, the co-creator of YOI, has proudly stated that YES there WILL be as second season of the hit anime and she plans on completing it sometime this year. There has not been an official release date set, but the second season is happening! There has been speculation as to what the second season will cover. Some believe that we will be taken into Yuri’s past while others believe that we will be delving into his mental health issues being his overwhelming anxiety and binge eating. Yet, regardless of the main focus of the forthcoming season, I think that we can all agree on one thing. The second season will be satisfying!
