Cosplayers strut in elaborate costumes, comic legends sign books for starstruck fans, and aisles buzz with the electricity of shared fandom — welcome to the vibrant universe of comic book conventions. More than just gatherings for collectors, these events have evolved into cultural epicenters where passion, creativity, and community collide.

Whether you’re a seasoned con-goer or a curious newcomer, comic book conventions offer an unforgettable experience that celebrates everything from superheroes to sci-fi and indie artistry to blockbuster franchises.

The Origins: From Niche to Nationwide Phenomenon

Comic book conventions began modestly in the 1960s, when small groups of enthusiasts gathered in hotel ballrooms to buy, trade, and discuss their favorite books. Fast forward to today, and events like San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) and New York Comic Con (NYCC) draw hundreds of thousands of attendees, host A-list celebrities, and break news on the biggest movie and TV franchises.

What started as a fan-driven subculture has become a multibillion-dollar industry — and it’s only growing.

More Than Comics: What You’ll Find at a Convention

Cosplay Culture

Costume play — or cosplay — is one of the most eye-catching and celebrated aspects of conventions. From handmade suits of armor to screen-accurate Jedi robes, cosplayers bring beloved characters to life and often compete in elaborate masquerade contests judged on craftsmanship, creativity, and performance.

Artist Alley

This is the heart of any good convention — a treasure trove of independent artists, illustrators, and writers. Here, fans can snag one-of-a-kind prints, custom sketches, and even commissioned artwork. It’s also a chance to support creators directly and discover emerging talent.

Panels and Q&As

Want to hear what’s next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or learn how to break into comic writing? Panels offer behind-the-scenes insights, creator roundtables, and fan Q&As. Industry announcements, trailer premieres, and even surprise celebrity appearances often happen during these sessions.

Merchandise and Collectibles

From limited-edition figures to vintage comic books, the vendor halls are a collector’s paradise. Whether you’re searching for a rare back issue or the perfect Funko Pop, chances are you’ll find it here — maybe even autographed.

Gaming Zones and Interactive Exhibits

Many conventions now include tabletop and video gaming zones, VR experiences, escape rooms, and immersive branded exhibits. It’s like a theme park for geeks, and the line between fantasy and reality gets deliciously blurred.

The Community: A Home for Every Fan

Conventions are, at their core, celebrations of fandom. They bring together people from all walks of life to share stories, swap theories, and revel in mutual obsessions. For many, it’s a safe space — one where creativity, identity, and passion are fully embraced without judgment.

“It’s the one place I feel totally myself,” says longtime attendee and cosplayer Jenna Torres. “I’ve made lifelong friends just waiting in line for a panel.”

Planning Your First Con? Here’s What to Know

Buy Early: Tickets — especially for major cons — sell out fast.

Plan Your Schedule: Popular panels fill up quickly. Use the con’s app or website to map out your day.

Pack Essentials: Snacks, water, comfy shoes, a power bank, and a poster tube go a long way.

Respect Cosplayers: Always ask before taking photos and avoid touching costumes.

Budget Wisely: It’s easy to get carried away in the dealer’s room. Set a spending limit.

The Evolution Continues

Today’s comic cons aren’t just about comics — they’re pop culture mega-events that embrace TV, movies, anime, video games, and more. Yet, at their heart, they still honor the medium that started it all: the humble comic book. As long as stories are told in panels and speech bubbles, conventions will remain a vibrant force in fan culture.

Final Thought: Come for the Comics, Stay for the Community

Whether you’re going to geek out over an obscure issue of X-Men, debut your handcrafted Mandalorian armor, or just soak in the atmosphere, comic book conventions are a celebration of creativity, fandom, and belonging. They remind us that behind every mask, cape, or con badge is someone who simply loves stories — and wants to share that love with the world.

Broly will be on the big screen!

Dragon Ball Super lives on with Dragon Ball Super: Broly. All the fans can rejoice in knowing Broly will be on the big screen. The English dub version will be in North America next year.

At San Diego Comic Con, Funimation revealed the very first trailer for the new film, which officially makes fan-favorite character Broly a canonical character.

In the trailer, Broly is seen fighting Goku, Vegeta, and even Frieza. Wrestling fans can imagine seeing Broly and Frieza in a Steel Cage Match.

The Dragon Ball Super movie was officially announced right before the television series’ end in April and will continue the story of the show. However, the reveal that Broly will be in the movie took fans by surprise. This will be the character’s canonical introduction into franchise after, first appearing in an out-of-continuity film in the ‘90s.

Broly’s most defining trait is his intense hatred for Goku. While both were newborns, Goku’s relentless crying greatly irritated the nearby Broly. Goku’s crying sparked the hatred which would grow sub-consciously in his early life and awaken upon seeing Goku again.

It is implied that the reason behind his hatred for Goku is because he subconsciously associated Goku’s incessant crying with the horrific things he had to endure later on as barely escaping Planet Vegeta’s destruction.

Broly has referred to him by his Earth name twice, both times during their fight on New Planet Vegeta (at least in the English dub). Broly has this inner hate for Goku that he can’t control.

What do you think about the trailer? Who would win in a fight between Double Shot and Broly? Let me know on Twitter and Instagram @BlueJayHJB and follow SEVNetwork on Instagram and Twitter @sevnetwork

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have released their first trailer for Kong: Skull Island at San Diego Comic-Con. The trailer can be see in the player below.

Kong: Skull Island will star Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Jing Tian, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham and Toby Kebbell, and will feature them as a team of explorers who venture deep inside the treacherous, primordial island to find the leader’s brother and a mythical serum, confronting extraordinary creatures along the way.

Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, Kong: Skull Island is scripted by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. Legendary’s John Jashni and Thomas Tull are producing alongside Mary Parent. Legendary has promised that the story will honor the foundations of existing King Kong lore, but will place Skull Island in an entirely new, distinct timeline.

“From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore,” Vogt-Roberts previously told EW. “Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island. Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them. The thing that most interested me was, how big do you need to make [Kong], so that when someone lands on this island and doesn’t believe in the idea of myth, the idea of wonder – when we live in a world of social and civil unrest, and everything is crumbling around us, and technology and facts are taking over – how big does this creature need to be, so that when you stand on the ground and you look up at it, the only thing that can go through your mind is: ‘That’s a god.’”

Kong: Skull Island will hit theaters March 10, 2017.

Fresh from their Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped two potential bombshells with the official Justice League and Wonder Woman teaser trailers. The first featuring several of DC’s most prolific and long-loved heroes joining forces (maybe, Aquaman is a bit of a tough sell…), and the second featuring the amazon warrior herself in a solo adventure unlike anything we’ve seen thus far from the DC Cinematic Universe. Both trailers can be viewed below.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League will see Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot reprising their roles as the DC Trinity, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in Justice League, and joining them are Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as The Flash. Amber Heard is set to play Queen Mera in the film as well before moving to the solo film slated for 2018, with Willem Dafoe appearing in a mystery role, and J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon.

Directed by Zack Snyder (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Justice League will debut in theaters on November 10, 2017.

Kevin Smith
What if you had a panel and the audience didn’t show up? Kevin Smith can tell you what it’s like: Last year, the clown prince of Comic-Con saw thousands of people abandon his annua Hall H talk for a once-in-a-lifetime outdoor Star Wars concert. But the plucky, portly director and podcaster is back to tell silly stories and talk about his new movie Yoga Hosers, his AMC Network shows Comic Book Men and Geeking Out, directing an episode of The Flash for The CW, his forthcoming Buckaroo Banzai adaptation, and the Mallrats sequel that’s gonna be a TV series! You can’t miss this perennial Hall H highlight (unless there’s something way better going on at the same time, like a Star Wars concert).
Based on the New Line feature film, Frequency is the story of a father and daughter who are supernaturally reunited two decades after his suspicious and untimely death. New York detective Raimy Sullivan was only 7 when her father, Frank Sullivan, an undercover cop, abandoned his family in pursuit of a case that led not only to his family’s breakup but his eventual death undercover. Always believing her dad died in disgrace as a corrupt cop, Raimy set forth to surpass him in law enforcement, rising through the ranks to detective. But everything she knows changes when somehow Raimy and Frank connect-across two decades-over Frank’s vintage ham radio in the garage. Where once Frank was lost in the shadows of his undercover work in 1996, he has now miraculously been found by his now-grown daughter in 2016.
Time After Time Pilot Screening and Q&A
Using the 1979 novel and movie as a launching point, Time After Time chronicles the epic adventures of a young H.G. Wells. At the age of 28, the 19th-century scholar has yet to publish any of his landmark science fiction novels, but his idealistic thinking and radical ideas have led him to actually create a time machine. When his longtime friend-the charismatic (and secretly psychopathic) Dr. John Stevenson, a.k.a. Jack the Ripper, finds himself cornered by the authorities at Wells’s London home, he escapes to present-day New York City using the time machine. Naturally, Wells follows, but instead of the utopian society he imagined would be in the future, he finds a world more aligned to Stevenson’s temperament. Fortunately, Wells meets up with Jane Walker, an assistant curator at a museum staging an H. G. Wells exhibition. As Wells and Jane come together, they will not only play a dangerous endgame with Stevenson, but also find themselves involved with the incredible characters and scenarios that inspired Wells’ War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and more. See a screening of the complete pilot episode, followed by a panel with executive producers Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson’s Creek, The Following, Scream movies) and Marcos Siega (Blindspot, The Following, The Vampire Diaries, Dexter, Cold Case, Veronica Mars) and series stars Freddie Stroma (Harry Potter films, Pitch Perfect, Game of Thrones, 13 Hours, UnREAL) and Genesis Rodriguez (Identity Thief, Man on a Ledge, Entourage, Big Hero 6). Based on the novel written by Karl Alexander and produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television, Time After Time premieres midseason on ABC.
