Comedians have always pushed the envelope. They approach the line of what society says is “acceptable” and stomp over it. From The Marx Brothers, to Lenny Bruce, to Redd Foxx, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, Jackie Mason, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinison, and Andrew “Dice” Clay. All funny people who went too far sometimes with what they had to say but there was some truth in their anger or their observations although we may not have always agreed with them or even liked them. Many of them faced controversy with what they said, some even had to face lawsuits where the First Amendment was in question and brought to play. All have made their mark in comedy.

Then there’s Emmy Award winner Mr. Elister Larry Wilmore. He’s known better as Larry Wilmore, an actor, a comedian, magician, media critic, political commentator, producer, television host of The Nightly Show, and a writer. Evidently he can’t hold down a job and he might be looking for a new one soon due to the furor resulting from his ill conceived comment that is being called “just a joke”. This past weekend at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Mr. Wilmore used a racial slur in referring to President Barack Obama. The President, in turn for what Mr. Wilmore called him in public, is being accused of being a hypocrite for not criticizing Mr. Wilmore for his actions.

President Obama is not only the one on the spot. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest was put in the uncomfortable position of trying to downplay the racial slur thrown at President Obama stating: “Comedians are going to go right up to the line” and that the President “appreciated [Mr. Wilmore’s] sentiments”. Yeah sure; depending if that comedian is a close enough friend to say what he said to President Obama in front of a packed televised room, otherwise the First Amendment of a comedian saying that word all of a sudden doesn’t apply. Don’t believe me? Ask Michael Richards who played the character Kramer on “Seinfeld” when he said the N-Word. It was practically career suicide for him.

People of all color and across the political spectrum were shocked by Mr. Wilmore’s statement. Reporters, politicians, even Reverend Al Sharpton was left appalled. He usually jumps at things like this to cause protests or raise money for his organization. What could he say or do when the President laughed along with Mr. Wilmore when Larry Wilmore turned to President Obama (at his last White House Correspondent’s Annual Dinner as President of The United States no less) and said: “Yo, Barry, you did it my n*gga”?? You could’ve heard a pin drop when he said that. I mean seriously, where is Reverend Al Jackson going to protest on this one? Where is he going to march? Yes, an element of comedy is shock, but that’s on film or stage, not directed at the leader of the free world, especially when he is the first President of the United States of America who isn’t white and especially when his presidency is stained with racial divisiveness. This is a real life black President of the USA, he is NOT the black sheriff of Blazin’ Saddles.

What’s even more shocking is that Mr. Wilmore beat his chest when he said it to the President and President Obama smiled back and hit his own chest. As a reminder, President Obama received a lot of flack when HE himself used the infamous “N-Word” in an interview last year and then he continued guilting the nation and the world about racism, racism, and more racism–and there he is grinning and beating his chest in response to Mr. Wilmore’s statement. This is the man who won the Emmy Award for writing the pilot episode of The Bernie Mac show?

‘Merica, he couldn’t come up with a better line than: “Yo, Barry, you did it my n*gga”?

When he finally addressed the issue of why he said what he did, he said that he considered The White House Correspondent’s Annual Dinner as a roast. The kind you see at the Friar’s Club or the old Dean Martin Roast, or the ones on Comedy Central lately. “You got to see how we interact when we’re not there. This is how we do it. And this is a word that has been used against black people for so long,” he said. “I was called a n—er several times as a child. I’ve heard that word. To defuse that and to use it in a way of camaraderie, and to take the power out of it in that moment is something that meant a lot to me personally.”

President Obama has roughly 7 months left in his presidency. This is just another unfortunate incident that will be remembered in his final year. Many feel racism is alive and thriving in the USA but let’s not gloss over something that’s in our face as much as racism presumably. The nation voted in an African-American in not once, but twice. That’s something to build on.

Major League Baseball was founded in 1903. It wasn’t until April 15, 1947 when the color barrier was broken. After all of those years, you can easily argue that “it was time” for a black man to play baseball although some people still weren’t ready for it. Knowing that, The Brooklyn Dodgers’ did not just grab any black baseball player to be their new second baseman. They scouted and found a man who could play the position and play it well. A man who was just as good offensively as he was defensively and who could run the bases with the best of them. A man who was as tough on the inside as he was on the outside. A man named Jackie Robinson. So when it came to “breaking the barrier”, a qualified person was found and selected to play for them, and he produced. Credibility was key in breaking the racial barrier.

The Liberal Democrat party likes to state in its rhetorical dialogue that “it’s time (for this or that)”. It’s time for a black president; it’s time for a woman; it’s time for a one- legged- blue -clad -circus -clown- from- the planet -Klingon, whatever, whomever. Ok. Sure. I don’t have a problem with that; but can we get qualified people please? President Obama, a community organizer who barely showed up as a Senator, eloquently sweet talked his way to get elected. He has flip-flopped on a lot of issues while the economy has seen a slow growth in his administration and he has made some highly critical decisions that some have called treasonous. Blaming things on his predecessor is a weak excuse. If you get a new job and are replacing another person, your new boss doesn’t want to hear you whine about your job; your new employer wants you to fix things and get the job done. That standard should also apply to the President. Obama knew what he was up against when he ran for the position; he was getting stuck with the decisions of those before him much like our next President knows that he or she will have to deal with Obama’s errors and there have been plenty. Obama gave $535 million of economic stimulus/tax payer money to SOLYNDRA for what? Solar batteries that never came to be. That deceitful company soon went bankrupt. Not just that, but since he’s taken office 46 million people in America are on food stamps. That’ s more people than the population of Denmark, Greece, Norway, Portugal and Sweden combined. That’s 5 countries worth of people! How he can just shrug that off and go play golf all the time with those numbers is extremely disheartening. Even the Obama girl burned her shirt and regretted supporting this man as have many others. I can get into so much more about his failures which have outnumbered his successes but it’s a waste of time because we’re all just going to get angry about it and besides, there will be plenty of articles looking back at his multiple failures and errors. For crying out loud, even the Nobel Peace Prize Committee asked him to return the award they gave him.

If it’s all about “breaking barriers” for the Liberal Democrat party, then they should take note of the way The Brooklyn Dodgers ended racial segregation in the major leagues with Jackie Robinson. If “it’s time for a woman” as many Leftists proclaim it is, then simply elect a candidate who is qualified. It’s a no brainer. We don’t need figureheads. Don’t just pick Hillary because she’s Hillary. She really hasn’t done anything great as a New York Senator and she really hasn’t done anything great as Secretary of State. She’s rude and crass to reporters and to US citizens asking her fair questions about legitimate concerns. She either tap dances around the questions or ignores it with contempt, if she’s not busy yelling at the person asking the question that is. She STILL hasn’t addressed the questions of why she referred to young black people as “super predators” and she has the gall now to say all whites are racists? This is what she is running on? More divisiveness and her hypocrisy? She certainly hasn’t seemed presidential yelling the way she has been at Senator Bernie Sanders. I ‘ve been expecting the camera to focus in on Bill Clinton when Hillary yells at Bernie so I can read Bill’s face and I know what I would see–Bill looking at Bernie and thinking: “I feel your pain Bernie, I feel your pain”. Her husband President Bill Clinton has been publicly criticizing President Obama while SHE says she will carry on Obama’s policies…WHAT?! Well what is it then Hillary? Do the Clintons support Obama’s policies or not?

Bill Clinton felt that the “race card” was played against Hillary when Obama ran for President, stealing the nomination from Hillary. Maybe Obama did. Maybe her time was then because it certainly isn’t now.

Hillary comes with a lot of baggage. The scandals attached to her and Bill since Hillary got kicked off of the Nixon-Watergate scandal for her lack of ethics and fraudulent legal brief alone would disqualify so many other candidates several times over, probably even have gotten them jail time but no, she and her impeached husband continue to get a free pass because of who they are. “It’s time for Hillary”, sage wise people like Robert DeNiro have suggested. No Bobby, it’s not. It’s time for someone else. Someone who won’t be so incompetent, who doesn’t come with all this baggage, who is qualified, and has credibility. Someone who won’t have another scandal, or two, or 47, lurking around the next day that would be another national embarassment. Jackie Robinson faced adversity. With what he brought to organized baseball with his talent, skills, and leadership he earned respect and credibility because he deserved it. The man was worthy. He was qualified. He proved to himself and the world that it was time for him.

Hillary has not. She’s had plenty of opportunity and chances but she has not proved to be qualified to be President as many Democrats have pointed out. Don’t say they haven’t because many Democrat voters have either voted for Sanders or have switched parties to vote for Donald Trump.

It’s time for Hillary to go away.

President Obama, with a tear in his eye, announced earlier this week some modest changes to the way firearms are sold in America. Since Congress is bought and paid for by weapons manufacturers, he was limited to a few narrow things that could be done by executive order. At the margins, they may save a couple of lives. However, all efforts to affect the pandemic of gun violence in America will fail to halt the violation of the human right to life until the country admits to one simple fact. There are too many guns in the country. Changing that is a political impossibility, and so, Americans will continue to die by firearm in the tens of thousands every year for another century or more.

An accurate count of the number of guns in the US is not easy to come by because Congress has forbidden the use of federal funds to collect data about guns. That is the gun lobby in action. If there are no data, there can be no debate about solutions because the nation isn’t even sure what the problems are. However, based on figures from states and from private entities, there is a consensus that there is roughly one gun per capita in the US in private hands. That is, there are approximately 320 million guns out there.

Now suppose that the gun-control supporters are correct that the more guns that are out there, the more gun violence there will be. That implies that a reduction in the number of guns will make the nation safer. Yet, the advocates of what passes for gun control in the US are proposing things that have to do with gun sales and a ban on possessing some of the more lethal varieties. None of that addresses the 320 million out there.

Further suppose that in an extreme use of the commerce clause, Congress banned the sales of all firearms both by weapons makers, dealers and private citizens. Even if such a ban passed judicial review (unlikely beyond words), there would still be 320 million guns out there. Given that there are people who can still fire their rifles that were made in the 1880s thanks to proper care and storage, waiting for the guns to wear out is not going to be a plausible approach.

So, the only real approach that can work quickly will be for Americans to give up their firearms either voluntarily or involuntarily. Neither is workable. A great many gun-owners may be persuaded to give up a small pistol or an antique that isn’t really worth collecting, but it is safe to say that most gun-owners possess firearms because they choose to do so and will not give them up voluntarily. “From my cold, dead hands” is an extreme way to put it, but it does capture how many law-abiding gun-owners think.

That leaves involuntarily disarmament, confiscation of firearms by the tens or hundreds of millions. It is difficult to envision a Congress that would pass such legislation, a president that would sign it, or courts that would uphold it as constitutional. Enforcement would be just this side of impossible even if politically it happened.

Alternatively, one can accept that the gun-lobby is correct that more guns make the nation safer. However, that begs the question of just how many are needed to reduce the gun violence rate to zero or thereabouts. Such logic suggests that every nation on earth should possess atomic and hydrogen bombs as well to deter aggression.

The gun lobby notes that Americans die in auto accidents in huge numbers, but there is no call to ban cars. While true, it misses the point that before there were cars, death by auto was impossible. If there are no cars, there can be no car-related deaths. If there are no guns, there can be no gun-related deaths. Yet, the genie cannot go back in the bottle.

Clearly the nation is making a trade-off. Cars are convenient but dangerous. Efforts to make them safer will not prevent all auto fatalities, but many safety improvements have saved lives. The gun lobby appears uninterested in making guns less dangerous to innocents such as promoting smart guns, but retrofitting 320 million firearms to make them safer is not possible either.

That is where America is on guns in 2016. There are either too many to make the nation safe, or too few if one wants to torture logic enough. The current discussion about sales is merely a sideshow. Since guns take decades to wear out, and since new firearms are made every day, it is safe to say that in 2116, America will still have this problem.
