Anyone who knows me personally knows my preferred start to a series is en medias res. An explosive start is always the best way to introduce a plot. The less contrived the conflict the better. All that being said God of High School delivered a pretty decent episode. There is a strong central conflict. The B story directly correlates with the theme. Let’s get into what went right this week.

Before the intro music is even played we get a very promising plot arc. Seeing a group of potential antagonists, who in God of High School fashion have absolutely splendid character designs. The motivations even seem grounded in the world building of this anime, which builds anticipation for their arrival.

Now we see the different reactions to facing overwhelming power. This will not only become the central conflict of the episode but also its theme. Note how dread man is petrified similar to the flashback in the previous episode. Mori, however is more motivated than ever, despite impending consequences and a possible wardrobe change. This leads directly into the B-plot. Immediately we get some legendary characterization in this fight. The ominous words of “A wooden sword won’t be enough,” before Liberty Belle and glasses girl are throwing blows. The pacing here is pretty amazing as both fighters look like they can be unbalanced at any moment. When we finally see a character downed it is through strategic follow-up from a leading move that looks like can only be pulled off with the other fighter’s cooperation, but it plays nicely into the introduction of this character. Simply put I love this character’s motivation, Mise- (oof you gotta work a little harder than that.) Liberty Belle’s motivation, a harem fantasy, is something we’ve seen countless times in male anime characters. It’s particularly effective with this character due to her background in wrestling. It’s far more justified than the MC who just goes to school. Those of you who never truly experienced childhood should know wrestling (especially WWE) is a very male-dominated sports. The ambition to dominate those males is more than gender bending a trope. It’s grounding a motivation. And then plot armor. Liberty Belle manages to knock the sword away from glasses girl. Unfortunately glasses girl is the sword, and only uses a weapon to make her opponents feel better. She begins slashing at Liberty Belle’s tits and Liberty Belle passes out before her nip slips. After this we briefly get back to the A-story to find out Mori’s punishment. Mori, like most of us is punished for his actions as well as the act of existing. He is ordered to fight a commissioner. He is also given drugged food to awaken his potential, after one of the bad commissioners finds out the identity of his grandpa. A man who likely beat enlightenment into the bad commissioner if we are to base this event off the episode’s theme. Mori doesn’t take well to being drugged and passes out.

Back to the B- plot, we get a glimpse into haircut employee’s life, he is a humble man, who possibly works in a pachinko parlor. This gives context to the fight where we see his fortitude. In the next fight we see Haircut employee overwhelmed by iigh Yagami and his one-off notebook. This scene does have the most characterization in their clothing. iigh Yagami wears sweats, which compliments his loose fighting style, and lax behavior. Even the glasses are for his little notebook. Haircut employee is wearing his anime casual slacks and a collared shirt. This further evinces his concise form, and precise strikes. This is a possible allusion to work ethic as well, (we’ve all had to tough out some internal bleeding for a check.) when Haircut employee is willingly bludgeoned by iigh Yagami’s slip-up, he humbly accepts the next ass whooping. An attack that impacts his muscles, bones, and organs, but doesn’t chip the plot armor. We see the fight get serious as the two let out special attacks. There is some splendid animation here. The theme is also revisited. Despite being overwhelmed iigh Yagami smiles before the finishing blows are delivered.

Now we get to my least favorite trope, combined with my absolute favorite homage so far. Gomu Gomu no only the chosen may wield. Part of Mori’s drug training included eating fruit to unlock his power. While this power may be much greater than his previous strength, it is not stronger than the Jo-jo/One Piece cross homage. I am honestly offended by the accuracy in this impromptu “Death Battle”.

Kaizoku Mori even with his awakened devil fruit is unable to match up with the commissioner and resorts to evading attacks, and essentially fleeing. Eventually the comissioner is restrained in the same way you’d imagine Mori would be after interrupting the match. Don’t worry Mori had already won the match seconds into the exhibition. Everyone reacts differently to overwhelming power. Well played The God of High School. Well played.

Many undocumented children as well as their parents are very disappointed. They are mad at Donald Trump ending the program (DACA). The program allowed many unauthorized immigrants to live and work in America.

A Mexican artist, Noel Torres briefly explained how his mother crossed the border of Mexico. Leaving behind his brother and him back in Mexico years ago. Twenty years later, Noel and his family are all residing in the United States. Although, Noel’s mother does not have papers and has not received her residency. Noel is proud of the opportunities America has granted him. Torres believes more needs to be done for those who are still illegal. Especially for the DACA dreamers.

A DACA Yale University student name Claritza, has explained that it isn’t fair how she is still not given the same opportunities at Yale University. She is undocumented in America. Now that DACA no longer is intact, she said that she will not give up and will continue to work hard. So she can become the lawyer she always dreamed of here in America.

Anterior president Obama found the end of DACA to be a cruel thing president Trump did. “To target these young people is wrong — because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating — because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a ‘dreamer?’ Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?”

There are 800,000 undocumented DACA participants and now they have to wait for at about six months in the hopes that Congress will support them.

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) teamed up with Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington (PPMW) to see that it’s newest clinic properly blessed.
Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, and secular leaders gathered earlier this month to bring their unique blessings, prayers, and testimonies on the importance of bodily autonomy.

“Having a group of interfaith clergy perform a ceremony focused on unity and wholeness therefore takes on special meaning to empower and celebrate rather than to stigmatize, control and dehumanize. Having such a ceremony take place at this moment in history is especially powerful for us as we seek to mobilize our communities of different faiths to come together to affirm and support the reproductive freedoms we cherish and have fought so hard to achieve.”
-Dr Laura Meyers, President & CEO, PPMW

With an emboldened conservative power, it was of utmost importance that this event was kept a secret until the day way over. On November 27, 2015, a mass shooting occurred in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to nine. Policy wise, President Trump has already reinstated Reagan’s global gag rule, which prohibits US birth control funding in other parts of the world. Simultaneously, steps have been taken to include women in the military draft. This blessing set to affirm autonomy in freedom at a time when women seem to be getting stripped of it by the day.

What is perhaps most important, and often overlooked, is the attention that was drawn to the unique struggles faced by women of color, Muslims, and LGBTQ women in this country. The Reverend Doctors Dennis and Christine Wiley led the ceremony. Pastors at the inclusive Covenant Baptist United Church in Southeast DC, both emphasized the importance of all feminists owning their role in the civil rights movement.

“As a progressive Womanist Christian who is concerned about wholeness in the community, especially for those who are marginalized and disenfranchised, my task is to do what Jesus did, to meet people where they are with love and understanding, and bring healing and freedom to them.”

-Rev. Dr. Christine Wiley, Pastor, Covenant UCC

The blessing was as joyous as it was upholding. The all-female Afro-Brazilian drumline Batala Washington created a vibrant echo of percussion through the halls as people arrived. An anonymous Texas native gave her testimony of the trials she faced when she needed an abortion. The Hindu pujari (priest) blessed literally every corner of the facility. Covenant’s dance leader brought many to tears with her performance. In short, RCRC’s Clinic Blessing was a soul lifting experience for all who attended…myself included.

An invitation video for a girl’s Sweet 15 party in Mexico went viral.

The girl’s father did a video. Along with his wife and daughter. The daughter’s name is Rubi Ibarra. In the video he started to mention everything that will be in the party. Including the date and location. “Everybody is cordially invited thank you.” Those were his last words. The video turned into an Internet meme. Immediately because of the videos increased views. Also the meme’s that were posted online. The media had a good deal to talk about.

Celebrities and regular people started to joke around. They did it with posts. And started inviting themselves to the Sweet 15 party. The party was held on December 26, 2016. In the small town La Joya, located somewhere in Mexico. Reporters started interviewing celebrities about the Sweet 15 party. Even way before it took place.

Famous Latin actress Niurka Marcos offered Rubi a free makeover. Marcos had a famous makeup artist for Rubi. Then a famous Latin designer wanted to gift Rubi. The gift was an extravagant Sweet 15 gown. Mexican band members laughed. Jokingly added they were attending the party.

The Ibarra family got invited to various programs. Then Rubi was offered acting lessons, free cake, clothes and the list went on. At a show, Rubi’s father confirmed publicly that the video was to only invite family and friends.

Unfortunately that did not occurred. After the video’s popularity, it was estimated that on December 26 about 40,000 people assisted the party. Sadly, one person died.

Journalists clarified that Rubi and her parents did not look too happy. There was a lot of commotion transpiring but Rubi went along to enjoy her birthday. She was given a car as a gift. The car gift came from the mayor. An artist, Marco Flores sang at her party.

Rubi changed into three different outfits. The fifteen year old danced a lot. She became the first Sweet 15 famous girl globally.
