Should Infinity War even count as a summer movie since Disney bumped its release from May 4th to April 27th? In the past, a film released on the last weekend in April was a spring release, but Hollywood continues to blur the lines between actual seasons and “movie” seasons.

If we were being strict about the actual definition of “summer” then only movies released between June 21 and September 22, 2018, would count as summer movies. But Hollywood doesn’t do that. Here at Geekcaster, we decided to include Infinity War … simply because we can.

After Infinity War, Disney’s three other releases in the Top 10 include Incredibles 2 ($597.7 million), Solo: A Star Wars Story ($213.6 million), and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($212 million). Some people may say Solo didn’t live up to the hype, but I thought it was okay.

The Avengers and Ant-Man and the Wasp weren’t the only Marvel superheroes to dominate the box office this summer. Fox’s Deadpool 2 came in fourth place with $318.4 million. Deadpool right now is probably saying “In your face Thanos!”

After Disney, Universal took two spots on the summer box office’s Top 10, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($413.2 million) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ($116.2 million). Paramount (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Sony (Hotel Transylvania 3), and Warner Bros. (Ocean’s 8) each scored a film in the Top 10.

Below is the synopsis for Deadpool 2:

Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool meets Russell, an angry teenage mutant who lives at an orphanage. When Russell becomes the target of Cable — a genetically enhanced soldier from the future — Deadpool realizes that he’ll need some help saving the boy from such a superior enemy. He soon joins forces with Bedlam, Shatterstar, Domino and other powerful mutants to protect young Russell from Cable and his advanced weaponry.

As reported by The Independent, during a Film 4 Summer Screen showing of Inception on August 10, Caine took to the stage to discuss the film, his relationship with director Christopher Nolan, and what Nolan told him about being able to differentiate between reality and dreams in the film.

“When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it and I said to him… ‘when is it the dream and when is it reality?’” said Caine. “[Nolan] said, ‘Well when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So get that: if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

The primary scene of debate is the final sequence of the film, after protagonist Dom Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is reunited with his children. He spins his totem on a table – in the rules of the film, if it spins on forever, he’s in a dream, and if it eventually falls, he’s in reality.

There have been many arguments for why the ending was a dream or reality. Some claimed that because the top appears to waver in the final shot of the film, that Cobb isn’t wearing his wedding ring, and that the audience can see his children’s faces, it was reality. Well, because his father-in-law, played by Michael Caine, was also in the scene, perhaps it can now be put to rest that it was, in fact, reality.

Nolan has always preferred that the ending remain somewhat vague and subjective, refusing to answer the question of if the ending is actually a dream or reality. Caine’s speech should be taken with a grain of salt. It is possible what he was told isn’t necessarily the full explanation. Still, his speech at the Film 4 screening was heartfelt, and he praised Nolan for what he has done for his career.

“I regard him as my lucky charm because when I got to an age of about 70 and the world started closing in on me, he came to me with one Batman Begins and he restarted my acting life,” said Caine.

“Because from then on when I thought you get to 70, 75, and you think it’s all over I then made seven of the best movies I was ever in.”

Just like any other film or television show, anime are broken up into genres. The genres include your classic drama, comedy, horror, etc. But there are also genres such as slice of life, shounen, shoujo, and fan service. Knowing these genres are key to finding the perfect anime for you!

Let’s begin with the slice of life genre! This genre is basically what it sounds like. Slice of Life can be any anime that includes a coming of age concept, relationships between friends/lovers as well as family. The key to the perfect slice of life anime includes seasonality within the series. Many sports anime can be categorized within the slice of life genre.

Shoujo and shounen anime are geared toward a specific audience type. Shoujo anime is typically made for young female viewers while a shounen series is made for a young male audience. A popular shounen anime would be Dragonball Z while Sailor Moon could be categorized as a shoujo anime series (one of my favorites). Many people don’t care for these two genres due to the fact that many people watch their anime of choice regardless of the shoujo or shounen genre.

Now anime that appear within the fan service genre are made specifically to please the audience. This may include intense violence, racy clothing or two characters who are strongly shipped together becoming intimate. Fan service is also found in shounen manga.

The director of Half Human, Ishiro Honda, is best known for directing kaiju and tokusatsu films in the 1960’s. His most famous work includes the original Godzilla, and it’s subsequent sequels. Half Human tells the tale of a group of friends who spend the weekend skiing and get more than they bargained for when they cross paths with a snow monster and a remote group of villagers. A group of zoologists enter the picture and attempt to seek out the snowman for scientific purposes, even going so far as to trick the natives in leading them to the beast. The film is from 1958, so needless to say, the special effects are pretty cheesy. The movie attempts to pull on your heart strings, even including a baby snow man, but ultimately leaves you laughing. It has all the fixings of a stereotypical movie of the time: corny dialogue, exaggerated and dramatic sound effects, and a snow man costume that looks something out of a vintage Halloween party. I was surprised to find that this movie had a solid plot line; a lot of movies I’ve picked up from this store had turned out to be some sort of soft-core pornography. The english version of this film features American actors, such as John Carradine, discussing the film as a flashback of events. While this may sound like your typical monster-genre movie; it was taken out of circulation for portraying the native villagers as inbred and uncivilized. While it’s no Godzilla, Half Human is a solid effort by Honda and an all-around decent low-budget monster movie. 7/10

The Guardians of the Galaxy trailer was only 1 minute and 29 seconds long but it was enough to get me wanting me more! Somehow even using the same soundtrack music from the original trailer still managed to bring about that same “to cool for school” magic that the first movie delivered.  Director James Gunn is once again at the wheel of this ship giving us everything we want and more.   Besides, if baby Groot is not enough to want to go to see this then I don’t know what is! Sadly we’re gonna have to wait till May 5, 2017 to see anything! UGH! THE STRUGGLE IS REAL!!  Chris Pratt (aka Star-Lord)and the rest of the cast are just as awesome as ever as they navigate their adventures through the cosmos while trying to figure out what its like to truly be a team and a family and maybe save the galaxy if they have time.

Speaking of time, what if you had all the time in the world? Well for years Logan aka Wolverine has had nothing but time.Due to his mutation Wolverine ages much slower than your average human but in the movie “Logan” we come across a much older Logan. But just because he’s older doesn’t mean there are any less problems or action. Director James Mangold gives us a more intense and solemn approach while still giving us the action packed movie we all want.  From what we can see in the trailer there has been a decline in mutant births and the mutants we all know and love appear to be dead and gone!  Left behind is a Professor X (that has seen better days!) and a young girl who has a very familiar power (mutant X-23?!). We get  a brief glimpse of a masked Merchant’s Caliban; a mutant who’s power is sensing other mutants.  That can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you are so I personally can’t wait to see what will become of our Wolverine and Professor X.  Of course the big bads of this movie are the cyborgs we see in the trailer, members of the mutant-hunting Reavers. Now what we are all wondering is what happened to all the mutants?! What’s the story with the young girl?! Guess we are just gonna have to wait and find out until March 3rd, 2017!

Well even though we have to wait till next year for those two gems to come out we only have about 2 weeks to go for Dr.Strange to get to theaters! (YAY!)  Dr. Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson.  The trailer tells the story of neurosurgeon, Dr.Stephan Strange (played by the dreamy Benedict Cumberbatch!)  who loses the use of his hands in a terrible car accident.  During his journey to recovery he is introduced to another way of looking at the world including magic and time manipulation!  If I could manipulate time I would make two weeks go by so we could get to this movie faster!  When the modern medicine fails him Dr. Strange turns to a more unconventional way of healing in a mysterious enclave called Kamar-Taj. Shortly after realizing that this is not your run of the mill healing center the Dr. begins his training to defend the world against the most powerful sorcerer in existence!  But will he choose a life of magic and defending the world; or will he go back to his successful life as a surgeon? (I think we all know what happens!) I can’t wait to see how this plays out!  Dr.Strange hits theaters on November 4, 2016 in 3D and IMAX 3D.

I know I’ll be pre-ordering my tickets for each of these films as soon as possible!  So who or what are you interested to see?!

Rick and Morty is an Adult Swim cartoon that takes the viewers dimension hopping along side the two characters that the show is named after. Rick Sanchez is an alcoholic scientist and his 14-year-old grandson is named Morty Smith. The show itself is whacky with its bright color scheme and the shrieking voices of the two main characters. But, it uses science in order for the characters to enter alternate realties and it accurately depicts the amount of stress teenagers have to deal with, which is why people admire it so much.

Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the creators of Rick and Morty, originally had the show start off as an animated short called “The Adventures of Doc and Mharti.” The clip was obviously a spoof of one of the most iconic movies from the 80’s, Back To The Future. (Incase you haven’t heard of the movie, which I doubt but I’ll explain it anyways; Back To The Future is the first movie of the trilogy and it jumps into the life of Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown as they screw up time and then attempt to fix everything.)

Okay so back on topic– Adult Swim offered the two of them the chance of their very own show, so Roiland and Harmon grabbed their weirdly designed spoofy characters from the short and rolled with it. Doc Brown and Marty McFly from the clip had a slight change in costume design and had their names switched to Rick and Morty. Even though Roiland and Harmon basically stole the characters from the movie, they gave a missing link that Back To The Future did not provide. The movie never explains the relationship between the Doc and Marty. Are they Uncle and nephew? Teacher and student? We never find out. All that we can figure out is that they’re friends. Whereas the relationship between Rick and Morty is stated that they are grandfather and grandson.

Rick and Morty first aired on December 2nd, 2013, and its popularity has continued to grow ever since. So as a “thank you,” the creators decided to give back to the fans.

Pocket Mortys, which is a spoof of Pocket Monsters, was released 3 days ago and made it’s way to the featured page on the app store. Pocket Monsters is a manga about a young boy named Red who goes on adventures to collect these monsters that roam the region. This 14 volume series transformed into the now more widely known Pokémon franchise. Pokémon is the overall name for these creatures that get captured by humans. Pokémon trainers train their Pokémon to battle against other Pokémon that were captured by other trainers. The whole point of the game is to collect all the Pokémon and defeat all of the gym leaders in order to get all eight badges. The Pokémon franchise includes mangas, movies, TV shows, a musical, trading cards and video games.

Pocket Mortys is the exact same concept as Pocket Monsters/Pokémon. Rick is the “Morty trainer” that collects Mortys and Morty is the Pokémon. In the app, Morty says on multiple occasions throughout the battles against the other Mortys “Isn’t this a bit cruel?” This line refers to the people who sent complaints to Game Freak Inc., the Japanese video-game developers responsible for the Pokémon games, ranting about how Pokémon is a violent game that encourage kids to abuse animals. Personally, I love Pokémon so I don’t really see an issue with it but if kids are learning how to abuse animals through these games, then the parents of those children need to have a serious talk with their kids about the fictional worlds vs the real world. The people who claimed Pokémon as “violent” probably view Pocket Mortys as “Fight Club The Video-Game.”

I haven’t completed Pocket Mortys yet, so that’s all the news I have on the app for right now. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the game as much as I do~
