I wanted to give The Black Panther a little distance before I delved into it head first, like practically every other Marvel movie I’ve ever seen. This was something a little different in terms of it’s pre-release popularity, cast complexion and general scope of the film itself. But, alas, I caved. There I was a week after the opening slapping down money for two tickets for my date and myself. I was actually somewhat surprised. You see, being from an old school I remember the days when The Black Panther was a new concept in comicbooks. Sure, we had the super powered, indestructible Luke Cage-known as Power Man way, way back when-and a brown hued hero here or there in the DC universe as well. But in those days the Panther was considered a D-level character, at best. Here’s what I mean; sure, he was a black man, but there was no real thrust to the character. He wore black, dressed like a night creature and was very agile and intelligent. Well, sure, but Batman plays that off as well, right? Where was the meat? The hook to keep you vested in the character himself beyond his costume and abilities? In truth, Bruce Wayne is equally as interesting as his alter ego, for many reasons. But the Panther lacked this, in my eyes at least. And as an Avenger he honestly added little to the group as a whole. How could they possibly make him interesting enough to invest millions of dollars as a full blown, modern day feature film? And there’s the rub, as Shakespeare would say; “modern day”.

Today’s Black Panther is a culmination of technology, amazing wealth, advanced, unparalleled science. In short, he’s James Bond meets Ironman. Some combo that is. What once was a bland character is now a bonafide, A-list, top flight Marvel heavyweight in his own regard. He’s prodigious as a team member or off on his own adventure. And this was long over due, again, in my opinion. Today’s Black Panther, king of the secluded and advanced land of Wakanda and played by Chadwick Boseman, has an entire suit made of a highly advanced combination of metal and sound called Vibranium. His sister is Q to his Bond, a genius at science and the creative process behind all the Panther’s gadgets and hardware. It has to be seen to be appreciated, because no amount of pretty words on page can do this terrific movie enough justice. A well crafted script embodied by a top notch cast that totally delivers on every line, in every scene. Amazing what a great production can do for the movie business.

There was nothing spared for anyone who appreciates this kind of film; action aplenty, fights galore, incredible car chases and, fortunately, thank the high Heavens a ‘real’ and well characterized ‘villain’-if you will-played brilliantly by the awesomely talented Michael B. Jordan, whose own agenda and perspective are not as villainous as you’d think, depending on your own point of view. A big part of the movies theme is morality. There are two very strong instances here where a choice made does and can have a hard trickle down affect. What does one man owe another. What is one countries obligation to another, or a man to his own family. This film wasn’t just slapped together haphazardly just to be thrown into the Marvel cannon. It leaves you pondering very deep thoughts.

I went in somewhat jaded by all of the hype, not wanting to get my hopes too high. My hopes were exceeded glad to say. For those who thought that there may be a little Caucasian alienation let me assure you, nothing could be further from the truth. The seventies gave us a plethora of Blaxploitation heroes and anti-heroes. Brothers from another mother, so to speak. But if the “we are all one” message never resonated soundly before, it does here. Power to the Panther.

Directed by Cowboy Bebop‘s Shinichiro Watanabe, a new anime based on the Blade Runner film is in the works as reported by The Verge. The short is named Blade Runner Black Out 2022 and will take place three years after the original film. According to the official timeline of the movie, the plot will be based around an electricity failure on the United States western coast. That power failure soon results to cities shutting down, the financial and trade markets are thrown into chaos, and food supplies fall short. No one is sure as to what has caused the black outs, but Replicants (the bio-engineered robots featured in the original film) are blamed.

You may need to sit down for this! The beloved anime Bleach, will be made into a live-action film to be realeased in Japan in 2018. The Tite Kubo creation is now in production! Kubo is working very closely with the production team to ensure its faithfulness to the manga of the same name as well as the anime.

Production is going well so far, the only concern that Kubo has expressed was the color of Ichigo’s hair. Kubo is curious as to how they will portray Ichigo’s well known bright orange locks in the live-action adaptation of the anime. He has stated, “if that color is in the live action-movie, it’d be strange, so I wonder what they’re going to do!” Me too Kubo, me too.

Check out the teaser trailer here!

In This Corner of the World (also known as Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni) is a 2016 Japanese animated war time drama. Produced by MAPPA, this story features character designs by Hidenori Matsubara and music by Kotringo. This film is based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Fumiyo Kono.

Already getting Oscar buzz, this animated film by Sunao Katabuchi touches on a key moment in Japanese history. The film is set in the 1930s-40s in Hiroshima and Kure, Japan. In this riveting story, a creative young woman named Suzu marries a man named Shusaku and moves to Kure City, a city 15 miles away from her home in Hiroshima City. Due to the threat of war, Suzu adapts to the situation by attending training against air raids, helping with with food distribution, and makes women’s trousers fit for emergency evacuation. Seeking solace in her drawings, Suzu uses the unique landscape to her advantage. As the threat grows throughout the film Suzu keeps her cheerful and optimistic personality. Eventually the war reaches its peak and Suzu’s life is forever changed. I strongly encourage anyone and everyone to check out this film. But for now, feel free to watch this preview!

Get ready ladies and gents! Adam Wingard has directed a Death Note live action movie that is set to be released this August on our beloved Netflix. As exciting as this may sound, the trailer has received mixed reactions from fans of the manga as well as the anime. From the casting choices to the storyline, many people are worried that the movie will not live up to fans expectations.

So, here’s the break down. The movie based on Tsugumi Ohba’s manga will be set in Seattle, Washington instead of Japan. This is a major red flag for some fans because it seems that the setting of the movie has effected the casting choices as well. Many people believe that the movie should stay true to the anime and manga, meaning that it should be set in Japan and the cast should be Japanese. Yet the role of Light will be played by Nat Wolff, Ryuk will be played by Willem Dafoe, and L will be portrayed by Keith Stanfield, all American actors.

Personally, I don’t mind, as long as the acting is decent. But, it’s the first Hollywood adapted live action film for this anime with a mainstream release, so die hard fans should at least get a proper nod to the OG. Especially with the bevy of talented Japanese actors in Hollywood that would be PERECT for this film. On the other hand, there is already a Death Note film series that began in 2008 that does have Japanese actors. Sooooo, there’s that. But to each their own.

If you haven’t seen the trailer, check it out here. Death Note is set to be released on August 25, 2017 on Netflix.

IT DOESN’T END HERE NARUTO FANS!

The continuation of the Naruto story has arrived in the form of a new anime series! It is set to release after Naruto: Shippudden ends during the final days of this month after a 10+ year run (*silently sobs*). Yet, the creators of Naruto refuse to let the story end there. It has been confirmed that a spin-off series will be released called, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. If the name wasn’t a dead give away within itself, yes, Boruto is Naruto’s son.

According to an interview with Animedia, Noriyuki Abe, the director of the upcoming Boruto anime, reveals that “the tale begins a little before the events of the movie,” Noriyuki Abe is referring to the Boruto movie that was released back in 2015. He also adds, “the movie occurs when Boruto, Sarada and Mitsuki are in a three-man cell and undertaking the Chuunin Exams, but the TV series will begin from when they enroll into the Academy. After graduating and forming their three-man cell, gaining experience and challenging the Chuunin Exams is the approximate timeline.”

Welp, there you have it. Naruto lives on! Sort of, in a sense I guess (*sobs harder*). Boruto: Naruto Next Generations premieres April 5th!

Hayao Miyazaki, widely known for his work on My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, is now preparing to come out of retirement in order to make a new film for Studio Ghibli. Fellow producer Toshio Suzuki, has confirmed this news in a pre-Oscars interview last month while attending the Academy Awards for his film The Red Turtle. In the interview, Suzuki stated that Miyazaki presented him a story board for the project that Miyazaki had created in just 20 minutes. 20 MINUTES!

It is speculated that this film will be a feature length version of Miyazaki’s CGI animated short, Boro the Caterpillar. Although Suzuki did not say much about the film, he did reveal that it “is really interesting.” There is yet to be a release date set for this project.
