Marvel Studios’ Black Widow stand-alone movie has its director.

Cate Shortland, the Australian filmmaker perhaps best known for the Nazi drama Lore, has signed on to helm Black Widow.

The studio met with over 70 directors in order to find its ideal candidate. A female filmmaker was the priority even as the search stalled at one point and the studio looked at male helmers.

The hunt narrowed in June with Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists alongside Shortland. Speaking of standout directors, Melanie Laurent (Galveston) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) were also in the next-to-final mix.

Shortland, who does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer. The actress admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that tells of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied forces roll in. Shortland’s most recent film was Berlin Syndrome, a 2017 thriller that stars Teresa Palmer.

Jac Schaeffer wrote the most recent draft for Black Widow. She also wrote the upcoming female-centric remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was formerly titled Nasty Women and is now called The Hustle.

Johansson’s Black Widow is reportedly set before the events of the first Avengers movie and sees the actress reprise the role of the Russian spy turned superheroine. Nick Fury may make an appearance toward the ending of the film. The movie will be Marvel’s second female-focused film after Captain Marvel, which is set to open March 8, 2019.

“It’s tough because a lot of my friends have said Moon Knight is essentially just Marvel’s answer to Batman, but I don’t agree with that,” Marquand told Adventures in Poor Taste.

“I agree that there are similarities, but Moon Knight was a mercenary — kind of a gun for hire who didn’t really have much regard for people before he had his moment of awakening, I guess. And Bruce [Wayne] was always a good guy — even as a kid, he was torn by revenge, but he wasn’t this bloodthirsty killer like Moon Knight was,” Marquand said.

“So I think that, coupled with what they’ve been doing the last 15 years with the character — going into the dissociative identity disorder, really calling in to question if everything happening is all in his head, is he actually a vigilante killer or did he die in Egypt?”

In the Marvel comics, Marc Spector was a Marine-turned-mercenary who was resurrected by Egyptian moon god Khonshu, who offered Spector a second shot at life if he agreed to operate as the god’s avatar. When Spector rejoined the land of the living, it was as a white-suited, brutal vigilante with multiple personalities.

“It brings up a slew of questions, and that to me has never really been delved into in any comic book character before — the idea of, is any of this actually happening? Is he actually dead in Egypt? Those are such amazing questions and I don’t feel like any comic book series before or since has really tapped into that,” Marquand said. “So for me, playing a crazy superhero would be awesome. So Moon Knight, Moon Knight for sure.”

Daredevil Season One showrunner Steven DeKnight might not have put Moon Knight in the series but he is game for creating a Moon Knight series.

DeKnight, whose most recent work was serving as director on Pacific Rim Uprising, spoke to ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview. Like his conversations about a potential God of War movie, DeKnight’s mention of Moon Knight started with a Twitter conversation.

“That’s a weird story actually,” DeKnight said. “I never considered including Moon Knight in Daredevil. Somebody asked me on Twitter a while back if I would do Moon Knight and I’ve always been a huge Moon Knight fan and yeah, if I had the time in my schedule and the stars aligned, I’d love to do Moon Knight. I mean, I love the whole multiple personality. Is he crazy? Is he not crazy? Has he really gotten these mystical powers? Are they supernatural or is it all in his head? I think it would make for a very, very interesting Marvel universe kind of Netflix show. I also hope they’ll expand and give him a shot sometime.”

On the horizon for Netflix is a third season of Daredevil, and second seasons for Luke Cage and Iron Fist. While many Marvel fans are lobbying for a Moon Knight series, the character has not yet been tapped for a live-action adaptation.
