Created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita, Sr., Luke Cage made his Marvel Comics debut in 1972, in the inaugural issue of “Luke Cage, Hero for Hire.” An ex-con turned superhero (for a price), Cage (aka Power Man) has gone on to become one of Marvel’s most recognizable and popular superheroes, his catchphrase”Sweet Christmas!” becoming one of the more notable ones in the Marvel brand.

Michael Colter leads the cast, returning from his debut on the immensely popular Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Also starring;  Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Theo Rossi as Shades and Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard.  Returning to the MCU will also be Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple.

Cheo Hodari Coker (Notorious, NCIS: Los Angeles) will be serving as show-runner and executive producer the anticipated series, as well as writer of the first two episodes.

Sarandos mentioned Marvel’s Luke Cage, which is slated for release on the streaming site later this year, and how it would be followed by Marvel’s Iron Fist and Marvel’s The Defenders in 2017, and that the previously-ordered Seasons 2 and 3 of Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s Jessica Jones would follow some time after. When asked about the possibility of getting more than two shows a year, Sarandos said:

“I doubt that we could produce at the quality that  produce at that speed. But we’re gonna try to make them quicker so we can get less downtime between them.”

On the subject of The Defenders, Sarandos said: “The whole cast is called on for The Defenders, which changes the production schedule for the other shows.”

This is turn led to the question of Jon Bernthal and his role of the Punisher – which has officially been greenlit for a series – and if he would be involved with the gathering of Cage, DD, Iron Fist and Jones: “Uh… stay tuned.” was Sarandos’ response.

Marvel’s Luke Cage is the next Netflix original series to follow in Marvel’s fold, which will star Mike Colter and will be released September 30.

It all commences Thursday, July 21st, with the first-ever with SDCC Marvel and Netflix panel session. Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Head of Television and Executive Producer) will serve as moderator. The Netflix Original Series: Marvel’s Luke Cage panel will feature Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Alfre Woodard, Mahershala Ali, Theo Rossi, Simone Missick, Frank Whaley and showrunner and Executive Producer, Cheo Hodari Coker.

On Saturday July 23rd, the Marvel Television SDCC concludes with a Marvel Animation Presents panel with Cort Lane (SVP, Animation and Family Entertainment,) Eric Radomski (SVP, Production and Creative Director – Marvel Animation) and Stephen Wacker (VP, Current Series & Development – Marvel Animation Studios). Look for exclusive sneak peeks from upcoming episodes, scoops on exciting new projects in development and  some special guests that have secretly RSVP’d.

Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada offered a tease or two during the Season 2 premiere for Marvel’s Daredevil. 

“Our goal is to provide four different shows that each have their own feel while, again, feeling like they are a part of a whole. Not an easy task, but I can tell you that our team is really fantastic at doing this,” says Quesada.“It’s still the early stages of Iron Fist, so I’m a little hesitant to say too much more than that. But Danny Rand is a completely different character and the world that he comes from, how he obtained his powers and his skills — all completely different.”

Scarce, but promising news about Kun Lun’s ‘master of martial arts’.

About Cage, Quesada says;

“We’re not just locking ourselves into Hell’s Kitchen — although a lot of stuff does go on in Hell’s Kitchen. Luke Cage’s world is still New York, but it’s a different neighborhood. Again, I don’t want to reveal too much more than that, but the show itself will have a different palate, a different feel, a tone. It will sound different. So stay tuned.”

Cage made his official debut in the MCU during the immensely popular first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, where we last saw a very much bereft and disillusioned Luke part ways with Jones after (*spoiler alert!*) learning she had killed his wife, Reva Connors. Granted, Jones was under the prolonged mind control of Killgrave aka ‘The Purple Man’ and was commanded to ‘take care of her’ — but alas — Cage was left distraught at the revelation.

Mike Colter will lead the cast for Marvel’s Luke Cage, which will also include; Simone Missick as Misty Knight, Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe, Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth, Theo Rossi as Shades, Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, and the return of Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple. Cheo Hodari Coker (Notorious, “NCIS: Los Angeles”) will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the series.

Finn Jones will star in Marvel’s Iron Fist as Danny Rand, the titular main character, which will be executive produced by Dexter showrunner Scott Buck.
