New trailers, film stills, and clips are drawing buzz around the King of Wakanda played by Chadwick Boseman. Within 31 days, audiences will see a powerful futuristic African society raise a new superhero in a film largely devoid of white actors. Marvel’s Black Panther is headlined by black actors and actresses, and the female characters who are not assistants nor solely love interests.  As the Panther battles to save the world and his people, fans are going to experience a generational cinematic event akin to DC’s Wonder Woman that shows Hollywood a minority superhero in a minority society can sell at the box office.

THE PUNISHER STAYS IN NEW YORK

Reports indicate production of Netflix’s The Punisher season 2 is likely to remain in New York. Season 1 starring the NYC based, gritty, rage-fueled comic book anti-hero hit Netflix in November 2017. Marvel can’t be more pleased with the reception the show received. Netflix released Frank Castle’s (played by Jon Bernenthal) story late in 2017. Upon release, The Punisher received a 62% from critics on RottenTomatoes (93% fan rating). While Marvel is bringing other vigilantes together (aka The Avengers), The Punisher seems most likely to exact justice as a one-man band. Castle can just as easily endanger his friends as he does his enemies. However, that doesn’t mean the gun-wielding ex Marine won’t fight alongside former ally Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and others if given the opportunity.

Berenthal was asked recently at ACE Comic Con in Arizona about who he would like to appear on screen with. His answer revealed Cox and Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter.

“You know, I love Charlie [Cox]. I’ve worked with him before and I’d work with him again on anything in a heartbeat. He’s the reason I’m doing this.He brought me into this and his performance is what made me want to do it.” Berenthal said on Cox.

“I’m a huge fan of Krysten’s [Ritter] too. She’s killer and I’d love to work with her as well.” Berenthal said on Ritter.

Having previously played the role of Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch in 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four, this won’t be Jordan first romp in the superhero genre. Jordan will be joined by Chadwick Boseman, titular King of Wakanda, and – if the stars align – Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o in an undisclosed role. In keeping with the rather hushed news of development for the film, Jordan’s role is also yet unknown. Andy Serkis’ Ulysses Klaw, having debuted in Avengers: Age of Ultron, will return. Also likely to return to the fold, Martin Freeman, who appeared in Civil War Everett Ross. Ross, being a long-standing character in the Black Panther comics, could very likely be ‘vehicle’ character for audiences’ entering the mysterious and incredibly reclusive African nation of Wakanda.

Ryan Coogler will both write and direct Black Panther, which will continue from Boseman’s breakout performance as T’Challa following the events of Civil War.

If cast (fingers crossed) Nyong’o will be starring alongside Chadwick Boseman, post his breakaway success in Captain America: Civil War. Nyong’o potential role in the Black Panther film is currently unknown, but rumor from the outlet hints she will be playing T’Challa’s romantic interest (this writer would prefer Shuri, T’Challa’s half-sister and eventual replacement as Black Panther, but…). Andy Serkis will return as Ulysses Klaw, after having made his debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron. 

Creed director Ryan Coogler will direct the film, as well as providing the script. Production for Black Panther is slated to begin in early 2017 to meet its February 16, 2018 release date in theaters.
