Before the intro music is even played we get a very promising plot arc. Seeing a group of potential antagonists, who in God of High School fashion have absolutely splendid character designs. The motivations even seem grounded in the world building of this anime, which builds anticipation for their arrival. 

Now we see the different reactions to facing overwhelming power. This will not only become the central conflict of the episode but also its theme. Note how dread man is petrified similar to the flashback in the previous episode. Mori, however is more motivated than ever, despite impending consequences and a possible wardrobe change. This leads directly into the B-plot. Immediately we get some legendary characterization in this fight. The ominous words of “A wooden sword won’t be enough,” before Liberty Belle and glasses girl are throwing blows. The pacing here is pretty amazing as both fighters look like they can be unbalanced at any moment. When we finally see a character downed it is through strategic follow-up from a leading move that looks like can only be pulled off with the other fighter’s cooperation, but it plays nicely into the introduction of this character. Simply put I love this character’s motivation, Mise- (oof you gotta work a little harder than that.) Liberty Belle’s motivation, a harem fantasy, is something we’ve seen countless times in male anime characters. It’s particularly effective with this character due to her background in wrestling. It’s far more justified than the MC who just goes to school. Those of you who never truly experienced childhood should know wrestling (especially WWE) is a very male-dominated sports. The ambition to dominate those males is more than gender bending a trope. It’s grounding a motivation. And then plot armor. Liberty Belle manages to knock the sword away from glasses girl. Unfortunately glasses girl is the sword, and only uses a weapon to make her opponents feel better. She begins slashing at Liberty Belle’s tits and Liberty Belle passes out before her nip slips. After this we briefly get back to the A-story to find out Mori’s punishment. Mori, like most of us is punished for his actions as well as the act of existing. He is ordered to fight a commissioner. He is also given drugged food to awaken his potential, after one of the bad commissioners finds out the identity of his grandpa. A man who likely beat enlightenment into the bad commissioner if we are to base this event off the episode’s theme. Mori doesn’t take well to being drugged and passes out. 

Back to the B- plot, we get a glimpse into haircut employee’s life, he is a humble man, who possibly works in a pachinko parlor. This gives context to the fight where we see his fortitude. In the next fight we see Haircut employee overwhelmed by iigh Yagami and his one-off notebook. This scene does have the most characterization in their clothing. iigh Yagami wears sweats, which compliments his loose fighting style, and lax behavior. Even the glasses are for his little notebook. Haircut employee is wearing his anime casual slacks and a collared shirt. This further evinces his concise form, and precise strikes. This is a possible allusion to work ethic as well, (we’ve all had to tough out some internal bleeding for a check.) when Haircut employee is willingly bludgeoned by iigh Yagami’s slip-up, he humbly accepts the next ass whooping. An attack that impacts his muscles, bones, and organs, but doesn’t chip the plot armor. We see the fight get serious as the two let out special attacks. There is some splendid animation here. The theme is also revisited. Despite being overwhelmed iigh Yagami smiles before the finishing blows are delivered. 

Now we get to my least favorite trope, combined with my absolute favorite homage so far. Gomu Gomu no only the chosen may wield. Part of Mori’s drug training included eating fruit to unlock his power. While this power may be much greater than his previous strength, it is not stronger than the Jo-jo/One Piece cross homage. I am honestly offended by the accuracy in this impromptu “Death Battle”.

 Kaizoku Mori even with his awakened devil fruit is unable to match up with the commissioner and resorts to evading attacks, and essentially fleeing. Eventually the comissioner is restrained in the same way you’d imagine Mori would be after interrupting the match. Don’t worry Mori had already won the match seconds into the exhibition. Everyone reacts differently to overwhelming power. Well played The God of High School. Well played.

The Coronavirus has changed a lot in such a short amount of time. We have went from carrying out our daily routines, to panic buying, frantic webMD symptom searching, and losing our minds due to stay at home orders. Most people have turned to any form of entertainment we could find, even getting back into old hobbies just to maintain our sanity while stuck at home. Unfortunately for those of us who have chose to pass time by binge watching and picking up new shows, we might experience some big let downs.

THE ANIME INDUSTRY

A lot of people were looking forward to what the anime industry had in store for us this spring 2020. After hearing about the plethora of new shows and movies that were scheduled to come out this year, people got pretty excited. That excitement came to an abrupt halt, due to COVID-19 being the real star of the show

STREAMING SERVICES AND MANGAS

Some anime production company’s often release new seasons and series, while still working on voice overs for a couple of those episodes. With the quarantine still going on, a lot of voice actors are not able to record until further notice, although Funimation is allowing some actors to record from home. Crunchyroll announced that they will be pausing all recordings for upcoming English dubs. Funimation has also announced delays to both its Simuldub and Simulcast schedules. Mangas and magazines have taken a little hit as well. Such as the popular magazine “Weekly Shonen Jump“ who had to postponed their 21st issue by a week. Even series that were scheduled to release during summer/fall are getting pushed back. Listed below are some of the latest announced delays.

• The new Pokémon series based on the Pokémon Sword and Shield game will be delayed and older episodes of Pokémon will air in its time slot.

The original web manga series began publication in early 2009 by an author who uses the pseudonym One. After becoming a viral sensation in June of 2012, a digital remake of the series was released by Shueisha’s Young Jump Web Comics which was illustrated by Yusuke Murata. An anime adaptation series soon followed in 2015 that was produced by Madhouse. The anime was released in Japan between October and December of that year. The dubbed version was later released in the US during the summer of 2016.

So, here’s the break down. The movie based on Tsugumi Ohba’s manga will be set in Seattle, Washington instead of Japan. This is a major red flag for some fans because it seems that the setting of the movie has effected the casting choices as well. Many people believe that the movie should stay true to the anime and manga, meaning that it should be set in Japan and the cast should be Japanese. Yet the role of Light will be played by Nat Wolff, Ryuk will be played by Willem Dafoe, and L will be portrayed by Keith Stanfield, all American actors.

Personally, I don’t mind, as long as the acting is decent. But, it’s the first Hollywood adapted live action film for this anime with a mainstream release, so die hard fans should at least get a proper nod to the OG.  Especially with the bevy of talented Japanese actors in Hollywood that would be PERECT for this film. On the other hand, there is already a Death Note film series that began in 2008 that does have Japanese actors. Sooooo, there’s that. But to each their own.

Well, it’s officially March which signifies the unofficial beginning of Spring! That means convention season is upon us.

From coast to coast, and country to country, geeks and nerds alike are gearing up for anime events that will make or break their favorite series. From early Spring to late Summer, cons and expos are a dime a dozen. Conventions are the ideal place to find information that you need on current as well as up and coming anime. Questions such as, “will there be a season 2,” “will the movie adaptation live up to the anime or manga,” and “which voice actors will lend their talents to the dub,” may be answered.

These conventions are also incredible platforms for up and coming manga writers as well as animators. So, if you believe that you have an incredible idea to share, attending a convention or expo is the way to go. Anime expositions as well as conventions allow creators of every experience level to showcase their talents to the public.

An added bonus to attending one of these geek infested soirées is that you may make new friends and form lasting relationships while fighting through the (usually large) crowds.  So, if you’re looking for a convention near you to attend, look no further! My Hero Academia tells the story of this middle school kid named Izuku Midoriya who was born without super powers. This poor kid who just wants to have a Quirk (super power) just like everybody else ends up getting bullied for not being born with a power. Despite being constantly bullied by this kid named Katsuki Bakugō, who has the ability to basically sweat explosions, Izuku attempts to save him from a villain. The world’s greatest hero, All Might, recognizes Izuku’s potential and bestows him with his own Quirk. Now transition into high school; the used-to-be-powerless kid makes his way through U.A. High School where he learns more about his powers along side the next generation of superheroes.

Kōhei Horikoshi, the writer and illustrator of this wonderful Japanese manga, started creating these wonderful stories for a magazine called Weekly Shōnen Jump on July 7th, 2014. So far there are 32 issues, which is pretty awesome. They started to get popular so the next step was its own manga. On November 9th, 2015, My Hero Academia Smash!! was published. At the moment there are 8 volumes of science-fantasy fun. Let’s take it up a notch, shall we? April 3rd, 2016, the famous Studio Bones, Madman Entertainment, and Funimation got involved and released the anime, which currently has 13 episodes. I feel like there should be a drum roll inserted here-> On May 19th, 2016, Bandai Namco Studios is bringing this action packed adventure to Nintendo 3DS’s everywhere with the video game My Hero Academia: Battle for All. It’s amazing how Horikoshi’s small story ended up becoming a huge success within a short span of three years. So yeah, be sure to catch up on the manga or binge the anime or just go right for it and pick up a copy of the game.

Rick and Morty is an Adult Swim cartoon that takes the viewers dimension hopping along side the two characters that the show is named after. Rick Sanchez is an alcoholic scientist and his 14-year-old grandson is named Morty Smith. The show itself is whacky with its bright color scheme and the shrieking voices of the two main characters. But, it uses science in order for the characters to enter alternate realties and it accurately depicts the amount of stress teenagers have to deal with, which is why people admire it so much.

Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the creators of Rick and Morty, originally had the show start off as an animated short called “The Adventures of Doc and Mharti.” The clip was obviously a spoof of one of the most iconic movies from the 80’s, Back To The Future. (Incase you haven’t heard of the movie, which I doubt but I’ll explain it anyways; Back To The Future is the first movie of the trilogy and it jumps into the life of Marty McFly and Doctor Emmett Brown as they screw up time and then attempt to fix everything.)

Okay so back on topic– Adult Swim offered the two of them the chance of their very own show, so Roiland and Harmon grabbed their weirdly designed spoofy characters from the short and rolled with it. Doc Brown and Marty McFly from the clip had a slight change in costume design and had their names switched to Rick and Morty. Even though Roiland and Harmon basically stole the characters from the movie, they gave a missing link that Back To The Future did not provide. The movie never explains the relationship between the Doc and Marty. Are they Uncle and nephew? Teacher and student? We never find out. All that we can figure out is that they’re friends. Whereas the relationship between Rick and Morty is stated that they are grandfather and grandson.

Rick and Morty first aired on December 2nd, 2013, and its popularity has continued to grow ever since. So as a “thank you,” the creators decided to give back to the fans.

Pocket Mortys, which is a spoof of Pocket Monsters, was released 3 days ago and made it’s way to the featured page on the app store. Pocket Monsters is a manga about a young boy named Red who goes on adventures to collect these monsters that roam the region. This 14 volume series transformed into the now more widely known Pokémon franchise. Pokémon is the overall name for these creatures that get captured by humans. Pokémon trainers train their Pokémon to battle against other Pokémon that were captured by other trainers. The whole point of the game is to collect all the Pokémon and defeat all of the gym leaders in order to get all eight badges. The Pokémon franchise includes mangas, movies, TV shows, a musical, trading cards and video games.

Pocket Mortys is the exact same concept as Pocket Monsters/Pokémon. Rick is the “Morty trainer” that collects Mortys and Morty is the Pokémon. In the app, Morty says on multiple occasions throughout the battles against the other Mortys “Isn’t this a bit cruel?” This line refers to the people who sent complaints to Game Freak Inc., the Japanese video-game developers responsible for the Pokémon games, ranting about how Pokémon is a violent game that encourage kids to abuse animals. Personally, I love Pokémon so I don’t really see an issue with it but if kids are learning how to abuse animals through these games, then the parents of those children need to have a serious talk with their kids about the fictional worlds vs the real world. The people who claimed Pokémon as “violent” probably view Pocket Mortys as “Fight Club The Video-Game.”

I haven’t completed Pocket Mortys yet, so that’s all the news I have on the app for right now. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the game as much as I do~
