From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king. The film also stars Amber Heard (“Justice League,” “Magic Mike XXL”) as Mera, a fierce warrior and Aquaman’s ally throughout his journey.

The other actors in the film are Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (“Platoon,” “Spider-Man 2”) as Vulko, council to the Atlantean throne; Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring” films, “Watchmen”) as Orm/Ocean Master, the present King of Atlantis; Dolph Lundgren (“The Expendables” films) as Nereus, King of the Atlantean tribe Xebel.

Nereus heralds from Xebel, one of the seven Atlantean Kingdoms that broke away from the city when it was sunk by King Atlan. Xebel and Atlantis had many wars in ancient times, and so when Atlantis finally defeated Xebel they used sorcery to trap Xebel in a physic barrier. This barrier would allow ships to enter the nation so that the people of Xebel could survive, and the area around the barrier became famed for the amount of ships sunken, being known as the Bermuda Triangle.

Wan directs from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“The Conjuring 2”) and Will Beall (“Gangster Squad,” TV’s “Training Day”), story by Geoff Johns & James Wan and Will Beall, based on characters from DC, Aquaman created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.

The film is produced by Peter Safran and Rob Cowan, with Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Walter Hamada serving as executive producers. Wan’s team behind the scenes includes such frequent collaborators as Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (“The Conjuring 2,” “Forrest Gump”), his five-time editor Kirk Morri (“The Conjuring” films, “Furious 7,” the “Insidious” films), and production designer Bill Brzeski (“Furious 7”).

The film is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2018 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

In the movie, Aquaman will find himself caught between a surface world that ravages the sea and the underwater Atlanteans who are ready to revolt.
Black Manta will make his DCEU debut as the hunter who is hired to track down Aquaman.

We will finally see the infamouts Black Manta wetsuit with a bug-eyed helmet, that is able to shoot rays from its eyes. Below is a photo of Black Manta:

Black Manta has some degree of enhanced strength and endurance. The serum that changed his brain from an autistic one into a more typical one, but left him extremely violent and vicious.

Black Manta’s armor further enhances these physical attributes. It allows him to lift cars and throw them with ease. In addition, his armor is bulletproofed and is vulnerable only to very powerful explosives.

ComicBook.com visited Aquaman‘s Australian set in July of 2017, getting a look at Black Manta’s fully spot-on comic-accurate costume but also hearing about how he factors into the next DC Comics movie.

Played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the character will likely emerge as a fan-favorite, as his feud with Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry just started.

“We meet Black Manta at a time where, it’s just him and his dad, and he’s riding on high, you know,” Abdul-Mateen II said. “He’s just come off of his wind, and there’s a changing of the guards, so to speak. And then, this guy, Aquaman, comes in, and crashes the party.” The relationship, like much of the Aquaman movie, will follow its DC Comics roots.

If Abdul-Mateen II were to use one word to describe his character, “Relentless” is the only one to cover it. “He’s so relentless,” Abdul-Mateen II said. “And so, in a fight, he’s never down, and he’s never out. And you think that he’s done, but he comes back. Also it’s like, ‘Hey, I finished you! I proved my point! I’m stronger than you. Stop it! Why are you still here?’ You know?”

While Abdul-Mateen II can’t give all of the details of Black Manta’s first appearance, he promises it is “pretty dope” as his character crashes into the Italian set built in the same location which was once Thor: Ragnarok‘s Asgard.

It will likely be one of the eighteen action sequences packed into James Wan‘s “swashbuckling” adventure.

“He doesn’t want to take over the world, he doesn’t have this grand scheme of, like, monopolizing something for his own personal benefit,” Abdul-Mateen II said. “He’s very much on the line. And so, he has this very strong moral code that he will not compromise, and that he will not negotiate on.”

A ruthless treasure hunter and mercenary, the man known as Black Manta spent his days scavenging the unexplored depths of the ocean, discovering long lost relics and powerful mythical items, all while taking on various jobs to fund his passion.

Until one particular job changed his life.

Hired to bring back a sample of Arthur Curry’s blood, Black Manta encountered the young Aquaman and his father while the two were out at sea. In the ensuing struggle, Aquaman’s father suffered a heart attack that ultimately led to his death.

Created by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy, Black Manta has served as a staple villain in Aquaman lore for decades. It would not be until the 1990’s when Black Manta would be given a proper origin story, which would occasionally be re-imagined or retold in numerous ways and through an equal number of mediums as being: an abused child among a ship’s crew, the revenge-seeking son of a felled ship’s captain and an autistic orphan driven to villainy after being the subject of experimentation in Arkham Asylum.

Jason Mamoa (Game of Thrones) will serve as the titular King of the Seven Seas, after having made his official debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and after entering the fold of heroes in the Justice League film.  Amber Heard will play Mera (Queen of Atlantis) and Willem Dafoe as his advisor Vulko.

James Wan will helm the solo Aquaman film as director, with a script penned by screenwriter Will Beall and acclaimed comic book writer and DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns.

Aquaman is set to hit theaters July 27, 2018.

Heard’s role in the film will be Mera, the romantic interest (and one day Queen of Atlantis) of our titular male lead. Prior to his own solo film, Mamoa will make his inaugural appearance in the DCCU in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, set to hit theaters on March 25, 2016. Aquaman will return in Justice League – Part One and Justice League – Part Two, slated for November 10, 2017 and June 14, 2019 respectively. Aquaman’s solo film will land between Justice League flicks, set for release on July 27, 2018.

It will indeed be a busy time for the king of the seven seas.

Aquaman will be directed by Saw and Furious 7 director James Wan, and is currently having two scripts simultaneously prepped by the studio. One by Kurt Johnstad (300, 300: Rise of an Empire) and another by David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, The Conjuring 2). Producing the film are Charles Roven, along with Zack and Deborah Snyder.
